Today's Locavore Challenge was to learn about a meal a Native American in Montgomery County would have made. This was a fun project for us since third grade students just studied Lenni Lenape, so our son was very helpful.
In his research he discovered the Three Sisters Garden. This kind of garden incorporates 3 plants (the sisters) that help each other out. They are corn, beans and squash. So, at the school garden this year, we will be planting a Three Sisters garden. In May, the corn will go in. Once the corn is up 3-4 inches, we will plant beans at the base of the corn. The corn will provide a support for the beans to grow, and the beans will fix nitrogen for the corn. We will also plant some acorn squash or pie pumpkins in the bed. The squash vines will grow and keep weeds out of the bed. We will be able to pick beans all summer and have popcorn in the Fall with the kids. Hopefully the pumpkins will grow this year and we can make pie with the kids!
