Food memories

I grew up on a small creek on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  My sister and I would spend many hours almost every summer day on a neighbor's dock crabbing with fish heads or chicken necks tied to a string.  Sound gross?  Maybe it was, but we had the best time!

A typical meal would be garden sliced tomatoes with a little salt, some cucumbers and onion marinated in vinegar and sugar, steamed corn, cantaloupe and steamed crabs.  Summer on the Shore was great.

My mom made a fabulous crab dip and I still make it when I can.  Here's the recipe:

1 lb crab meat
2 cream cheese blocks
8 oz sour cream
4 tbsp mayo
1 tsp lemon juice
2-3 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp dry mustard
3 shakes garlic
1 c. grated cheddar cheese

topping:
1/4 c grated cheddar cheese
paprika (or, we use old bay instead!)

Mix the main ingredients to spreading consistency.  Sprinkle 1/4 c cheese on top.  Sprinkle with paprika or old bay.  Bake 325 for 30 minutes.

I am doing the Longview locavore challenge for the month of February.  By participating, get to participate in the Longview workshops for free!  Read all about the challenge here and follow their blog here.  I enjoy getting my vegetables from a CSA  and trying new things, I have a home garden and run a local Elementary School garden, and buy most of the meat my family eats from local farmers, I just buy it in bulk to save money!

Eating seasonally and locally is great for my taste buds, helps us try different things, and I am keeping money in the community.
